When You Pray in Tongues ...What Happens?!
July 18, 2007 • By Dave Roberson
Have you ever noticed that the more you try to find time to seek God, the more things come up to keep you from doing just that? These can be very legitimate reasons and they can be trials and circumstances that the devil throws your way — and he has a very good reason to try to stop you.
The Spirit of God who lives within you knows God’s mind and plan for you in this generation. As you diligently pray in tongues, you enable the Holy Spirit to make intercession for you before the Great Throne Room of Grace according to the plan of God. This is when you can know that all things work together for good to you who love God and are called according to His purpose. Why? Because His plan for your life is in His overall purpose, and the Holy Spirit is the One praying it into existence!
That one revelation is enough to make you want to pray all night in tongues, isn’t it?
You may ask, “Well, what will the Holy Spirit do for me if I am faithful to pray in tongues?” He will run out ahead of you. He will begin to work out God’s plan for you, illuminating your mind to that which God has for you in the coming months and years. Why will the Holy Spirit do this for you? Because you’re a blood-bought child of God. God thought so highly of you that He sent the third Person of the Godhead to live inside you and to work out His purposes, pursuits, and plans in your life!
But understand this: The devil isn’t just planning on fighting you; he wants to FINISH you. What is he going to do? Well, like any good general, he knows that if he can cut off the supply line, he can win his war with you without firing a shot. If he cuts off the supply line, you’ll be reduced to a whimpering, crying little baby running for help like a scalded dog.
Oh, the devil would like so much to cut off your supply line and neutralize you until you are nothing but a member of a powerless religion that never accomplishes anything for God. You see, Satan doesn’t mind so much if you sit in a church that just baby-sits you and sees you through to Heaven. He just wants to steal anything from your walk with God that could threaten his kingdom of darkness—things such as your pleasure in laying hands on the sick and watching them jump up healed; the peace and joy that is only experienced when your source completely changes from this world to God; and the deep contentment that comes from knowing your divine supply is untouchable.
When you have God you not only have more than enough—you have a thousand new starts. Sure, the enemy wants to neutralize you. He doesn’t want you to ever know the pleasure of ministering to people in the power of God. Satan doesn’t want you to know what it is to go into places of darkness and watch God supernaturally deliver you as He did the children of Israel in the wilderness. The devil just wants you to die after living a mundane life, still wondering how real God actually is.
So we see that Satan does what any good general would do—he goes for the source of supply. When a general wants to cut off the opposing army’s supply line, he orders bridges and roads to be blown up so supplies can’t be hauled in for the enemy soldiers. You see, although a good general is usually not a frontline warrior, he is always a master strategist. That’s why he knows that the best way to win any war is to cut off the supply line if at all possible.
Satan is also a master strategist. He’s good at what he does, and he knows that taking religion away isn’t the best way to defeat humanity. People will always find SOMETHING to worship, so the devil just slips in alternate objects of worship to pacify them while life passes them by.
Well, who do you have in YOUR life to abort the devil’s strategies? You have the Greater One living inside of you! First John 4:4 says, ...Greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. The Holy Spirit has come as the earnest of your inheritance to make sure you receive everything you need from Heaven. He has come to teach you and to supply you with God’s power so you can overcome in every situation of life.
Do you want to make the devil really mad? Just start getting into the Word and praying in tongues on a regular basis! You scare the devil when you consistently and persistently do that which causes the Word of God to come alive in you. You worry him. He doesn’t like you spending your time with the Source. He doesn’t want you to hang around the inside of God’s armory where all the spiritual weaponry is stored. So what does the enemy do to prevent that? He goes for your supply lines!
When you make quality decisions, such as, “I believe I’m going to pray faithfully in tongues like I never have before,” you’ve just decided to open a supply line from Heaven that is unparalleled. Do you think the devil is going to get excited about that decision? I guarantee you that he’s going to get real excited! He will do anything he can to get you to quit. The devil really doesn’t have any choice. He has to try to make you give up; otherwise, you’re going to emerge from your prayer closet as a very dangerous foe!
I’m not trying to scare you. I’m just telling you how important it is not to neglect the revelation gift of praying in tongues.
Remember, the other seven operations of God listed in First Corinthians 12:28 all rest on this eighth operation of diverse tongues: the mighty apostle, prophet, and teacher; the pastor and evangelist, represented by the workings of miracles and the gifts of healings; and, finally, helps and governments. The word “diverse” simply means different supernatural manifestations of the language of tongues. The particular manifestation I’m talking about in this letter is the one that edifies you and builds you up. Why are you edified when you pray in tongues? Because he who prays in an unknown tongue speaks not unto man but unto God (1 Corinthians 14:2).
This is not the manifestation of tongues that has to be interpreted because we speak unto GOD when we pray in tongues for personal edification. No man understands us. Why? Because we are speaking mysteries. These are the same mysteries that were hidden on the inside of God on the other side of spiritual death and that have now been made available to the Church. These are the mysteries of everything Christ, the hope of glory, is in us, to us, and through us.
You can’t pray one hour in tongues without expressing some aspect of the mystery of what Christ is in you. “What if I pray all night, Brother Dave?” Then you will express eight or nine hours of what Christ is in you, moving you toward the day that you’ll understand those divine mysteries like the back of your hand.
The devil is afraid of you. He’s afraid that you’ll begin walking in the mind of Christ and understanding His power. The devil is also afraid you’ll realize that the town you live in doesn’t have to go to hell. He’s even more afraid that you’ll stand up to him and do something about it!
You might ask, “But what happens when I pray in tongues?” First of all, the Holy Spirit borrows your human spirit for the authority to pray through you. Then you pray an entire understanding of some mystery that is in the mind of Christ. Revelation begins to drop into your spirit; then the Holy Spirit starts feeding your mind with that revelation. You start knowing what God wants to do with your life.
You start knowing all things are possible to him who believes. You start knowing these things better than you know your own name.
So the devil is actually afraid of your prayer life—your supply line—and he has a real good reason to be afraid! You’re not stopping, nor will you relent or take a side path as you pursue God’s plan for your life. You won’t give up; you won’t stop praying; and you won’t be shaken. You WILL prevail because the Greater One within you continually supplies you with the wisdom and the power of God!
